Edwinstowe: A Delightful Village
A Day Out Near Bridleways Guest House
Published: January, 2026
Just a short drive (13 minutes) from Bridleways Guest House, the historic village of Edwinstowe is a charming and lively destination that’s perfect for a relaxed day out. With a mix of heritage, independent shops, welcoming cafés, pubs and fascinating stories around every corner, it’s a lovely stop whether you’re here for a morning wander or a full afternoon adventure.
🌿 A village steeped in history and legend
Edwinstowe is often called Robin Hood’s Village – and legend has it that this is where Robin Hood married Maid Marian at St Mary’s Church. You’ll find a statue on the High Street celebrating the couple, making it a fun and picturesque photo stop.
But the village’s history goes even deeper than folklore. Its name comes from the “stowe” – or holy shrine – of King Edwin of Northumbria, who was killed in battle in 633 AD and, according to tradition, buried here in Sherwood Forest so his enemies couldn’t find his body.
🏛️ What to see and do
St Mary’s Church
A beautiful medieval church rebuilt in stone in 1175, St Mary’s is well worth a visit. Its ancient architecture and peaceful churchyard offer a wonderful sense of history – and the Robin Hood connection only adds to its appeal.
Statue of Robin Hood and Maid Marian
Right on Edwinstowe’s High Street, this bronze statue celebrates the village’s connection to the legendary couple. It’s a popular spot for photos and gives a real sense of the local community’s pride in its folklore.
Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre
A short stroll from the centre, this creative hub is home to boutiques selling everything from handmade chocolates to jewellery and vintage fabrics, plus a café if you want a snack while you browse.
Walks and nature
Edwinstowe sits right on the edge of the forest, so it’s easy to combine your visit with a scenic walk. Whether you follow forest trails, stretch your legs through quiet lanes or explore nearby nature reserves, the options are gorgeous year-round.
☕ Great places to eat and drink
Edwinstowe has a brilliant local food and drink scene – ranging from cafés to hearty pub meals.
Here are some favourites:
Cafés and light bites
- The Village Kitchen – A cosy, highly-rated café serving homemade light lunches, hearty breakfasts and cakes – ideal before a walk or browse.
- Fables Coffee House – Stylish café with great coffee, breakfast options and sweet treats.
- Sherwood Forest Art & Craft Café – Classic light lunches and cream teas located in the Art & Craft Centre (great if you’re shopping local).
Lunch and dinner options
- The Lansbury Restaurant & Bar – A well-loved spot with seasonal, locally-inspired dishes in a historic cottage setting, perfect for a relaxed lunch or early dinner.
- Bistro Balsamico – Highly rated bistro offering contemporary cuisine with a friendly atmosphere.
- Royal Oak Edwinstowe – Classic British gastropub on the High Street – beloved for hearty Sunday roasts and pub favourites..
Edwinstowe isn’t just about Robin Hood (though that’s certainly a fun angle!). It’s a thriving village with real local life – independent shops, community events, green spaces and plenty of personality. Many visitors say it’s one of the places that gives them the real feel of rural Nottinghamshire.
