What is Nottinghamshire Day?
Nottinghamshire Day was created to celebrate the county’s unique identity, history and culture. The date of 25 August commemorates the anniversary of King Charles I raising his Royal Standard at Nottingham Castle in 1642, marking the beginning of the English Civil War.
Today, Nottinghamshire Day is a celebration of local pride, bringing together communities, attractions and businesses to showcase the very best of the county. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, food or family days out, it’s a wonderful time to visit.

Five ways to celebrate Nottinghamshire Day.
Whether you’re joining one of the official celebrations or simply exploring the county, here are a few great ways to experience Nottinghamshire:
1. Visit an official Nottinghamshire Day event.
The main Nottinghamshire Day celebrations will take place at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August 2026.
The free event runs from 11:00am to 4:30pm on both days (with the Visitor Centre open from 10:00am to 5:00pm). Entry is free, although RSPB parking charges apply (£7 for the day).
Visitors can enjoy a fantastic programme of family-friendly activities.
2. Explore Sherwood Forest.
No visit to Nottinghamshire is complete without exploring the legendary Sherwood Forest. Wander woodland trails, visit the Major Oak and discover the stories of Robin Hood that have made the forest famous around the world.
3. Discover historic Southwell.
Just a short drive from Bridleways Guest House, the beautiful market town of Southwell is well worth a visit. Explore the magnificent Southwell Minster, browse independent shops and enjoy lunch in one of the town’s welcoming cafés.
4. Visit Rufford Abbey Country Park.
